The pretty trinket was a gift from her pa, so he’d know her when he returned from the sea. Her ma said so as she died, coughing up blood and leaving Mary alone on the London streets.

She knew it was the difference between living on crusts and charity or having a bed to call her own, but she couldn’t let it go. Someday pa might come back.

She wasn’t afraid when the pirates broke through the workhouse wall, even when her own pa looked at her with murder in his eyes.
