Update: Now deceased: killed by Sam, much to Castiel’s horror. Told Dean he started the apocalypse: “When a righteous man sheds blood in hell, as he breaks, so shall it be broken.” John was supposed to be that righteous man, but did not break; when he escaped from Hell, Lilith set her sights on Dean.
