An angel. Cryptic and of few words, Castiel was commanded by God (or by the four Angels who have seen God) to rescue Dean Winchester from Hell, because they have work for him.
This work is most likely preventing the Apocalypse.
Castiel guides and educates Dean, and according to Uriel, likes him. (Uriel does not approve of this.)
Castiel loves the world and its people because it’s his Father’s creation. I find this incredibly endearing.

Supernatural just got into the game by introducing Castiel (an angel of Thursday apparently) who dragged Dean out from Hell. Glimpsing his true form will burn your eyeballs out, so, like demons, he has to use a human host. He also has a “true voice” which creates an effect like a sonic boom. It remains to be seen whether he’ll be a good guy or the Big Bad. He and his fellows can apparently be killed and he has proven capable of getting pissed off about lack of respect and willing to threaten people in response. His partner Uriel is quite blatantly racist towards humanity, calling us ‘mud monkeys’, an attitude Castiel warns is close to blasphemy. He is also very, very pretty.
