The Green Knight Sequence

<<Grail challenges | 2009 Big Bang | Dropped ideas >>

Maybe the Trickster shows them how to find the Green Knight: they wander around Chicago for a few days, hustling pool etc, and then they try to hustle the trickster and fail, but convince him to help them somehow…or he just does it because he likes them, and hates Lilith. (“There’s no place for tricks in Hell. It’s all screaming and torture. No fun at all.”)

When they meet the Green Knight, he tests them with riddles: use some classic medieval ones. Anything more they should do to prove themselves?

Themes from the poem
*temptation and testing (one or both of the boys could be tempted: Sam is not in love but Dean is)
*chivalry, proof of moral virtue
*courtly love–chaste love from afar (which is what Dean has had for Castiel for most of the story)
*a knight’s code of honor requires him to do whatever a damsel asks: knightly honor and courtly love are often in conflict
*nature invades and disrupts the orderly world of Arthur’s court
*pagan values: nature, female energies
*games: the outcome of the games affect the ending of the poem

In medieval literature, green symbolizes:
*nature, fertility, rebirth
*witchcraft, evil (the devil is sometimes painted as green)
*love, base desires
*regenerative powers
*spoiling, decay

the green knight is a judge and tester

Neck wounds: related to the will, connect reason (the head) to courage (the heart).
*Someone–depending on when, the Trickster (who might come with them?) or Maya–tells them not to lose their heads, or their hearts; and they think how strange that is as they’re usually warned not to lose their heads.

Anyway, the threat is that he’ll cut off their heads if they answer incorrectly or are unworthy, and then after they prove themselves eh gives them his sword: Excalibur/Caliburn or Joyeuse? Or a different sword entirely? Does the Grail sword have a name?

They spend about three days in the Green Knight’s realm, then back to Bobby’s or onto another job…how do they learn where to go next? Next location is Medicine Wheel: the green knight gives them one last riddle and they don’t figure it out for a few days. The riddle should be something about the wheel of fortune–or maybe he gives them the tarot card as a hint? (Or Maya does…)
